Electrical & AC guides

How electrical work is regulated in Cyprus, what to check before someone opens your fuse box, and keeping split units clean and safe to run.

In a Cyprus home, electrics and air conditioning go together. Split units cool the house through long summers and, in many homes, are also the main heating in winter, so they run for much of the year and put a steady load on the wiring. Older homes, and Nicosia has many, can have wiring and fuse boxes that were never sized for several AC units, an electric water heater backup and an EV charger at the same time.

Location adds its own wear. Outdoor units in Larnaca and Limassol face humid, salty sea air that corrodes fins and connections. Nicosia's inland heat makes units work hardest in July and August. In Paphos, holiday homes often switch on units that have stood idle for months, which is when blocked drains and stale smells show up.

These guides cover how electrical work is regulated in Cyprus and what to check before anyone opens your fuse box; the questions to ask an electrician before rewiring, fault-finding or fitting an EV charger; and how often to service split units, what a proper service includes and why work on the refrigerant gas needs a certified technician. They also help you tell an electrical fault from an AC fault: a breaker that trips every time the AC starts may need both trades.
