AC servicing in Cyprus: when to do it and what a service should include

Book an AC service before the summer rush, ideally in spring, and again before heating season if you use your units for heat. A proper service cleans filters and the indoor coil, checks the drain, cleans or inspects the outdoor unit and checks how the unit performs. Any work on the refrigerant gas must be done by a technician certified for fluorinated gases; in Cyprus that certificate is issued by the Department of Environment.
Why timing matters
Most homes in Cyprus run split units hard from early summer to autumn, and many use them for heating in winter. Technicians get booked up once the heat arrives, so a spring service is easier to schedule and you find faults before you need the unit most.
What a service should include
- Removing and washing the filters.
- Cleaning the indoor coil and fan, which is where dust and mould build up.
- Checking and clearing the condensate drain so water does not drip indoors.
- Cleaning or at least inspecting the outdoor unit and its fins.
- Measuring the air temperature coming out and listening for unusual noise.
- Telling you if anything needs repair, with a price, before doing it.
Gas top-ups and F-gas certification
Air conditioners use fluorinated refrigerant gases. Under EU Regulation 517/2014, which Cyprus applies through Law 62(I)/2016, people who work with these gases must pass exams and hold a certificate, and in Cyprus the Department of Environment issues it. Equipment containing these gases is supposed to be sold to end users only when installation will be done by a certified company.
A unit that needs regular gas refills has a leak. Ask the technician to find and fix the leak rather than just topping up.
What affects the price
Number of units, how dirty they are, access to outdoor units (a balcony is easy, a roof or high wall may need extra equipment), whether you want a basic clean or a deep clean with the indoor unit opened up, and any repairs or gas work. Ask for a per-unit price and whether it changes for several units at the same address.

Can I clean the filters myself?
Yes. Washing the filters every few weeks in summer helps. It does not replace a professional clean of the coil, fan and drain.
