How to choose an electrician in Cyprus: licences, quotes and red flags

Last updated 16 October 2026

In Cyprus, electrical work has to be done by people registered with the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services (EMS). An electrician needs a certificate of competence plus an annual registration certificate that expires on 31 December each year, and businesses doing electrical work need a business licence. Ask to see the current registration before any work starts.

The licensing rules, in plain terms

The EMS issues certificates of competence and annual registration certificates for electrical engineers, senior electrical technicians, installation contractors, maintainers and electrical technicians. Under the Electricity Law, nobody may practise these professions or run an electrical works business without the registration or a business licence.

Because the registration certificate runs to 31 December, ask for the current year's. A company should be able to tell you which licensed electrician is responsible for its work.

Describe the problem well

A clear description gets you a better quote and a faster fix:

  • What happens, and when: for example, the breaker trips when two air conditioners run.
  • Age of the property and whether the board has been changed.
  • Photos of the fuse board and the fault area.
  • For new work (lights, sockets, EV charger): where it goes and where the board is.

Questions to ask

  • Can you show me your current EMS registration?
  • Is the quote fixed or by the hour, and does it include materials and VAT?
  • Will you test the circuit after the work and give me a written report or certificate if needed?
  • For an EV charger or big new load: does my supply need upgrading first?

Common jobs in Cypriot homes

Tripping breakers in summer are a familiar call, often because older circuits were not designed for several air-conditioning units at once. Fuse board upgrades, extra sockets, outdoor lighting and EV chargers are also common. Faults that involve burning smells, hot sockets or repeated tripping should not wait.

Find an electrician

Request an electrician in Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos or Larnaca. Electricians who cover your area contact you directly. If your AC is the cause of the trouble, see our AC servicing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electrician need a licence in Cyprus?

Yes. They must hold an EMS certificate of competence and a current annual registration certificate. Companies doing electrical works need an EMS business licence.

When does an electrician's registration expire?

The EMS registration certificate expires on 31 December each year and must be renewed.

Why does my breaker trip when the air conditioners run?

Often the circuit or supply is overloaded, but it can also be a faulty appliance or a failing breaker. A licensed electrician should test it rather than you swapping breakers.

Can a handyman do small electrical jobs?

Electrical work is reserved for registered electricians under Cypriot rules. For anything beyond changing a bulb, use a licensed electrician.
