How to choose a locksmith in Cyprus (and avoid surprise bills)

Last updated 16 October 2026

Before a locksmith starts, ask for the total price, including the call-out, labour and any new cylinder, and get it in a message. A good locksmith will try to open a door without destroying the lock, will ask you to show you live there, and will tell you what a replacement part costs before fitting it. If someone will not give a price until the job is done, call someone else.

If you are locked out right now

Call more than one locksmith if you can and ask each the same three questions: how long until you arrive, what is the call-out charge, and what is the likely total if the lock has to be replaced. Night, weekend and holiday call-outs usually cost more; ask whether that applies.

Expect to be asked for proof that you live there, such as ID with the address, a tenancy agreement or a neighbour who knows you. A locksmith who does not ask is one you should not trust with your door.

If you rent, tell your landlord. Many tenancy agreements say who pays for lock changes and who must have a key.

Questions to ask any locksmith

  • Is the price you are quoting the total, including call-out and VAT?
  • Will you try non-destructive entry first?
  • If the cylinder needs replacing, which brand and security level are you fitting, and what does it cost?
  • How many keys come with a new cylinder, and can more be cut later?
  • Can you send the quote and a receipt by message or email?

Changing locks after you move in

You do not know how many copies of the old keys exist. Changing the cylinder on the front door (and any back or balcony door) is a small, planned job, and planned jobs cost less than emergencies. Many modern doors use a euro-profile cylinder that can be swapped without replacing the whole lock. Ask the locksmith to confirm what your door has.

If you are upgrading security, ask about anti-snap and anti-bump cylinders and whether the door itself (frame, hinges) is the weak point.

If something goes wrong

Keep the written quote and receipt. If you think a trader treated you unfairly, the Cyprus Consumer Protection Service takes complaints online and runs a consumer helpline on 1429. It investigates breaches of consumer law; it does not settle individual compensation claims.

Find a locksmith

Request a locksmith in Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia or Larnaca. Local locksmiths who cover your area contact you and you agree the price directly with them.

Frequently asked questions

Do locksmiths in Cyprus charge extra at night?

Many do charge more for nights, weekends and public holidays. Ask for the full price before they set off.

Will the locksmith have to break my lock?

Often not. Many doors can be opened without damage. If the lock must be drilled, the locksmith should tell you first and quote the replacement cylinder.

Should I change the locks when I move into a rented flat?

It is sensible, but check your tenancy agreement and speak to the landlord first. They may need a key and may agree to share the cost.

Where can I complain about a trader in Cyprus?

The Consumer Protection Service accepts consumer complaints online at consumer.gov.cy and through the helpline 1429.
